Laying the Groundwork for Agricultural Resilience

The International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA) was established in 1996 as a collaborative initiative between the Government of the United Arab Emirates and Islamic Development Bank (IsDB). This partnership marked the inception of a global institution dedicated to addressing the challenges of salinity, water scarcity, and sustainable agriculture in saline and arid environments.

ICBA’s journey began with expert consultations in 1992, which culminated in signing an establishment agreement in 1996 between the Government of the United Arab Emirates and the IsDB. By 1999, ICBA became fully operational at a state-of-the-art, 100-hectare facility in Dubai's Academic City. This milestone set the stage for ICBA’s pioneering work in agricultural research, fostering resilience, and introducing science-based solutions for the world’s most vulnerable farming communities.
