Dr. Yvon Martel is an experienced agrologist who is passionate about using science and collaboration between the private and public organizations to develop agricultural production in the pursuit for global food security. He started his career in 1972 with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) where he served as a scientist, director of two research centers, director general for eastern Canada, and chief scientist, international, until his retirement in 2011. 

Dr. Martel holds a Ph.D. in Soil Science from the University of Saskatchewan, Canada, and a Certificate from Harvard University for the Making Corporate Boards More Effective program. He was an invited university professor in Canada, Morocco and Honorary Professor in three Chinese universities. He is also an independent review expert for the European Commission.

Dr. Martel earned several distinctions nationally and internationally, including Gold Harvest Award for outstanding career achievements from AAFC, a Doctorate Honoris Causa from Laval University, the Knight of the Order of Agricultural Merit from the French Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries of France, and the Friendship Award by the Chinese Government to foreign experts for outstanding contribution to the development of China. He is a regular speaker on agriculture science management.
